Extra Life unites thousands of players around the world in a 24 hour gaming marathon to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Since its inception in 2008, Extra Life has raised more than $22 million for local CMN Hospitals.
Extra Life is the name of the event that gamers put together each year to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network charity. Its a time when gamers from all over the world get together to play video games, board games, card games and much more all in order to raise money via donations from the general public.
The charity organisation is based in the United States but it does help children from all over the world. Certain hospitals that are supported by the Children’s Miracle Network are considered ‘International’ hospitals and their efforts benefit children further afield. JoypadAndMe in fact are donation money for the Boston Children’s International Hospital.
What gamers do to support this amazing event is raise money via donations and support while playing video games for 24 hours straight. Gamers from all over the world get together either in groups or via online to make a difference. JoypadAndMe has been doing just this for many years now. Playing games sounds simple enough but playing for 24 hours is no easy task. Playing competitively in groups with sleep deprivation is a challenge that makes for some fun times. Many groups including ourselves stream our actions live online via Twitch, YouTube and FaceBook so that people can watch, get involved and ultimately donate to the Children’s Miracle Network which is the sole goal of this unique event. JoypadAndMe have held both small and big events over the past few years and we can honestly say that we have had so much fun planning, organizing and then playing during the event that it has become a yearly tradition that we not only enjoy but have become passionate fund raisers.
One of the main questions we get asked by potential donators that don’t live in the USA is why are the donations made in US dollars and not UK £? The simple answer is that with different countries having different legislation and documentation when it comes to charities, it can become almost impossible for charities like this to put everything together to make it possible for donations in different currencies. While this can sound a bit confusing for some people, we can assure you that all money raised by the Extra Life event and the Children’s Miracle Network go to helping kids fit illness and disease such as cancer. In the end, does it really matter where in the world the charity is based if it involves helping save children’s lives?
The next most common question we are asked is what amount to donate. This is probably the simplest answer, anything you can. Honestly, any amount you could afford to donate would make a difference. We would love to see large donations come pouring in but with the way the world is lately we know that that simply isn’t something that most can do. Donations can be as small as you like and it will still make a difference. If 10,000 people all donated something as small as £5 then that small number would swell to become £50,000! even £1 will add something to the charity so please spare what you can and know that whatever you donate, it will be used in the best possible way to help the children. No portion of any donation goes to administration or corporate bosses etc. Let me just state that again to make it perfectly clear,
100% of all donations goes straight to saving children’s lives.
We’ve added a little conversion chart on the side here to help people decide what they want to donate to make things easier for people in the UK. Again, donate what you can spare as anything makes a difference. There is also the option of having your donation repeated every month. Doing this can also make a big difference without you even noticing. Imagine donation something as small as £2 a month. £2 is a small amount which won’t even buy a pint in the pub nowadays. Yet this £2 a month added together over 12 months can be added up to £24. That’s a generous donation that you wouldn’t even notice missing. We’ve all lost far more than that on a night out, or even down the back of the sofa!
Decide what you feel you can donate, be it a one off payment or a monthly donation and then follow the link below to make that donation. Once finished you can then sit back and call yourself a Hero. Why you ask, well by making a donation you have just helped to save a child’s life! That’s what hero’s do, they save lives.
If you need any more convincing to donate to such a worthy cause then why not take a few minutes out of your day and watch this video of one of our old staff discussing why he supports Extra Life. This video was made in 2014 but the sentiment and passion remains the same.
