Everyone knows Gears of War 3 came out on September 20th and is currently the second most played game on Xbox Live. I finished the campaign about a week after it came out and I noticed that Cliffy B’s top game resembles another Microsoft exclusive. If you haven’t guessed it, I’m talking about Halo. I noticed when I was in Act 5 of Gears, that there were major similarities in Gears and the Halo franchise.
A couple of similarities are the creatures, the story, and the character deaths. The Locust and the Covenant look very similar. The Wretches closely resemble the Grunts and the Drones look like the Brutes. Another similarity is that The Lambent severely resembles The Flood. It seems like each game’s parasitic life-form takes two sequels for the last civilization to finally eliminate the parasite. The last major noticeable similarity is that certain characters from the first game die in the third. I won’t give you any spoilers into who dies in Gears 3, but it’s kinda foreshadowed in Act 3.
I’m not sure if Epic Games are to blame or if it’s Microsoft’s fault. When Epic made the Gears Franchise, Microsoft had already had the rights to Halo and Microsoft knew that the Gears of War story was very similar, so similar that it’s basically the same story. I realized, though, that Epic Games created a game back in January called, Bulletstorm. I won’t go into any major detail, but it’s just a remake of Gears of War. I think it seems like Epic Games are just trying to make cheap bucks and really don’t care about the gaming industry or its fans. I know that people will buy Gears of War 4, but will you? I know I won’t.
